Storytelling coats

Since the year 2000, Marijke has been making her wearable art. She loves making coats with a story to tell. Marijke van Welzen’s colourful coats and jackets are true eye-catchers.

As a viewer you are wowed by the lavish decoration and the richness of details. Marijke likes to work around a theme.

Starting points can be: fairy tales and stories, a country, flora and fauna, a certain piece of fabric or a colour.

Her favourite technique is textile collage. She works intuitively. Starting with many tiny pieces of fabric, felt and yarn, and colourful machine threads she “paints” her designs. She likes to combine this with surface design techniques like stencilling, stamping and needle-felting.

Her work constantly evolves as she finds new images in her imagination and develops the techniques to create them in cloth. Her coats and quilts travel to exhibitions all over the world.
