In this creative and playful workshop, Cecilia Koppmann invites students to step into the shoes of architects and urban planners as they improvise their own vibrant cityscape.
They’ll explore how to cut freehand, design buildings filled with windows, balconies, and bold shapes, and piece everything together into a striking urban composition that reflects their personal style.
Throughout the class, she teaches key techniques including: freehand cutting to create both organic and architectural forms; precision piecing using ultra-thin strips; methods for joining irregular angles and non-parallel edges; and two distinct appliqué methods, including reverse appliqué.
Students also discover improvisational composition strategies to build strong, cohesive designs without planning everything in advance, and learn how to integrate irregular shapes seamlessly into their quilt top.
By the end of the workshop, they’ll have gained valuable tools to boost their creative confidence and bring more freedom and originality to future projects—whether inspired by buildings, landscapes, or fully abstract ideas.
This class is perfect for anyone who loves fabric, color, and the joy of building something entirely their own.
