Pascale Goldenberg balances her life as an independent artist with managing the transcultural hand-embroidery program Guldusi, which she initiated in Afghanistan in 2004. On one hand, she considered her responsibility toward 200 embroiderers a priority, but on the other, she neither could nor wanted to give up her artistic pursuits. Over the years, she had to find ways to combine these activities in a balanced and almost satisfactory manner for all involved. She has practically found a solution to this balancing act by focusing her own artistic work on the issues surrounding Afghanistan; the reality is that this has consumed her energy—materially, temporally, and emotionally—for nearly 20 years.
